Florida retailers are reporting their strongest quarter in five years, with tourism-driven foot traffic pushing sales figures well above national averages. Industry analysts point to a perfect storm of post-pandemic travel recovery, a booming snowbird season, and aggressive promotional strategies by major retail chains across the state.

According to data released by the Florida Retail Federation, total retail sales climbed 8.2% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026, outpacing the national average of 3.4% by a wide margin. The surge was particularly pronounced in coastal markets, where international tourist spending has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.

"We haven't seen numbers like this since before COVID," said Maria Gonzalez, chief economist at the Florida Retail Federation. "The combination of strong domestic tourism, a record snowbird season, and pent-up consumer demand has created ideal conditions for Florida retailers."

Luxury and specialty retailers led the gains, with apparel and accessories up 11.3% and home goods up 9.7%. Big-box retailers also reported strong results, with several chains announcing plans to open additional Florida locations before the end of the year.

The outlook for the remainder of 2026 remains positive, with analysts projecting continued growth through the holiday season. However, some retailers cautioned that labor costs and supply chain pressures could weigh on margins even as top-line revenue climbs.

Small and independent retailers also shared in the gains, particularly in tourist-heavy markets like Key West, St. Augustine, and Sarasota. The Florida Small Business Development Center reported a 12% increase in retail business registrations in the first half of 2026, suggesting entrepreneurs are betting on the state's continued retail momentum.
